Reasons Your Garage Door Won't Close Properly

If your garage door doesn't raise all the way up or close properly after it lowers, consult a garage door contractor soon. Your garage door could have one or more issues to repair. Learn why your garage door won't raise, lower, or behave properly below.

Obstructions in the Path of Your Photo Eye Sensors

If you use a garage door opener to operate your garage door, check the photo-eye connected to it for problems. The photo-eye relies on two sensors to monitor your garage door. The sensors generally sit along the sides of the door or close to the bottom of it. Whenever the sensors detect anything in the path of the door's threshold, they activate and instruct the opener to stop moving.

Anything can signal the photo eye sensors to act, including toys and tools. Take a look at the lower half of your garage door. If you see anything in the path of the door, remove it. Avoid sticking your hands or anything else in the path of the door during your examination. The door may unexpectedly come down and harm you.

If you don't find anything near or below your garage door during your examination that could make it behave erratically, call a contractor. You may need additional services for your garage door.

Problems With Your Garage Door Cables

If your garage door is many years old, it could have problems with its cables. Your garage door works best when it's perfectly balanced. If the cables break or rust, they can cause the door to become unbalanced. The door will not raise or lower properly over time.

A garage door contractor or company can inspect the cables to see if they feature anything that keeps them from working smoothly. If the cables do show signs of deterioration or physical damage, a contractor or company will replace them. Although it may be possible to repair damaged cables, it may be safer to replace them with newer cables.

If your garage door's cables check out fine during the visit, a contractor or company will check the door's springs, rollers, and other components for damage. The parts previously mentioned can make the door behave erratically if they lack lubricant or crack. A contractor or company can recommend how to replace or repair those parts to you.
